General Contractor Training

The type of general contractor training that is required and available depends largely upon the trainee’s location. However, most general contractor training programs are similar in nature. There are many training programs offered at community colleges and other learning facilities locally and nationwide.

Contractor training programs are designed to prepare students for entry level positions in the construction industry. Training is usually provided for the building and construction of residential buildings as well as commercial construction. General contractor training programs provide instruction in blueprint reading, foundations systems, exterior and interior finish systems, building site layout procedures, framing construction methods, concrete foundation and forming systems, and overall construction safety. The time required to the completion of a training course and the number of classes to be taken varies and depends upon the particular institution. Most general contractor training programs provide instruction that will aid students in furthering their careers to those including architectural design, civil engineering, and construction management.

Many community colleges and some universities offer contractor training programs. The cost of a construction program can often be paid using financial aid. In order to qualify for financial aid, a future student must complete a FAFSA form. This can be done using the internet. Many colleges that offer general construction programs offer distance learning courses, or courses that can be taken online. Information can be obtained through the mail, from the internet and at colleges, universities and other facilities regarding general contractor training.

There are many contractor training programs that offer instruction relative to construction management and supervision. The AGC of America offers an excellent supervisory training program. The program includes a construction-specific curriculum composed of twelve comprehensive courses that focus on the skills and knowledge that construction supervisors need in order to be effective managers of the many tasks associated with construction. Students who complete the AGC construction supervisor program will receive a certificate of completion.

It is very important that general contractors become trained and licensed. Completing a general contractor training program ensures that the contractor is qualified and up-to-date on construction methods, ideas, concerns, and safety. Qualification also serves as verification that the contractor is knowledgeable, skilled, and experienced in the field and qualified to complete the required tasks efficiently. Licensure indicates to the employer that the contractor is serious about his or her career and can be relied upon to complete the necessary duties and responsibilities.
